Tov. Petrosyan G.P. from 1941 to 1946 served in the Air Force of the Soviet Army as a fighter pilot.
In 1947 he graduated from the evening school of working youth, and in 1952 - from the Armenian Agricultural Institute. During his studies, he was a State scholarship holder and a released secretary of the party organization.
After graduating from the Institute Comrade. Petrosyan G.P. worked as an instructor in the party department of the Yerevan City Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia, and then as a secretary of the Kirov District Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia.
In 1953 he entered graduate school and after graduation he defended his thesis. In 1956-1958, he worked as a teacher at the Armenian Agricultural Institute and worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Agronomy.
From 1958 to the present, comrade. Petrosyan G.P. He is the director of the Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Armenian SSR.
Tov. Petrosyan G.P. as director of the institute, he made every effort to create a modern scientific institution. In parallel with the organization of the institute and the creation of experimental bases, he carried out a lot of work on the training of highly qualified scientific personnel (trained 40 candidates of science and 7 doctors) and carried out the tasks assigned to the institute for the soil and agrochemical survey of the land resources of the republic. In a short time, along with the development of topical theoretical problems, it became possible to implement the decisions of policymakers to provide all farms with large-scale soil and agrochemical maps.
Tov. Petrosyan G.P. from the first days of his scientific activity, he has been successfully dealing with the problem of melioration and development of saline and waterlogged soils, the issues of effective application of fertilizers and improving the use of land resources of the Armenian SSR.
Under the leadership and with the direct participation of Petrosyan G.P. studies of the soil-genetic, soil-hydrogeological and soil-agricultural features of the Ararat plain, where the main massifs of soda-saline and waterlogged soils are widespread, have been successfully carried out. He studied the main aspects of hydromorphic-saline processes, the interdependence of lithological-geochemical and hydrological-soil processes of saline-waterlogged soils, as well as the relationship of soil-saline processes with ground-drainage and irrigation waters of the plain and the drainage basin adjacent to it.
Scientific activity of comrade. Petrosyan G.P. is also devoted to the development of methods for reclamation of saline lands. In particular, he developed a trench-hole method for their development and use for planting fruits and grapes for local arrays of saline lands, he proposed a unified technology for chemical reclamation of solonetzes-salt marshes of the Ararat Plain using chemical industry waste, presented a system of machines and an economic justification for the developed method, which is the basis for the design of reclamation facilities. Thanks to his active work, the chemical method of reclamation of saline lands has been brought to an industrial basis and since 1962 has been successfully introduced into production.
A characteristic feature of the style of Petrosyan G.P. is the ability to organize complex research with the involvement of specialists from related industries for a comprehensive scientific development of the problem before its introduction into production. Under his leadership and direct participation on 200 hectares of saline lands of the Institute's experimental station, the problem of agricultural development of reclaimed soils was successfully developed. Cultivators, assortment, sequence of their cultivation and specific issues of agrotechnical measures are proposed.
A comprehensive study was carried out on ways to improve and increase the fertility of settled lands, ways to reduce and rationally use irrigation water, irrigation regime and technique, and measures were developed to prevent the possibility of secondary soil salinization. Together with his colleagues, he comprehensively studied and established the influence of residual soil salts on the growth and development of plants, issues of metabolism and adaptation of plants in adverse cultivation conditions, established the parameters of salt tolerance of various breeds and varieties of perennial and annual crops, issues of product quality up to recommendations for the production of high-quality desserts. wines
Thanks to his efforts, the reclamation station of the institute, in fact, has become the standard of an exemplary modern agricultural enterprise, whose activities are known in many countries. Over the past time, more than 500 specialists from 75 countries of the world have familiarized themselves with the work carried out at the station, highly appreciating the Institute's achievements in the field of saline land reclamation. The results of research with great erudition are presented in 180 works published by him and in the collective monograph ''Soils of Armenia''.
Possessing great organizational skills, comrade. Petrosyan G.P. systematically initiates the promotion and implementation of new problems and ideas that are of great scientific and industrial importance for the development of agriculture in the republic. On his initiative, the country's first zonal agrochemical laboratory was organized in the country, equipped with non-standard equipment, designed under his leadership and with direct participation, he is also the initiator of the creation of a new form of training scientific personnel under the NTO of agriculture of the republic - public postgraduate studies for specialists in agricultural production. Thanks to his daily assistance, more than 70 public graduate students have successfully defended their Ph.D. He is the initiator of the introduction of intensive industrial gardens in the republic, a non-working wage system, the organization of an reclamation trust for the development of saline soils based on the technology developed by the institute, the introduction of automated irrigation systems, etc.
Tov. Petrosyan G.P. persistently and consistently uses all forms of social influence for the successful introduction of scientific achievements into production. Speaking with high party principles on the pages of central and republican newspapers, at party plenums and sessions of the Supreme Council, on radio and television, publishing brochures and booklets, creating popular science films, organizing traveling scientific conferences and meetings in various regions of the republic, directs the attention of the public on the implementation of the decisions of the decision-making bodies on the development of agricultural production and, in particular, on the protection, melioration and improvement of soil productivity.
Tov. Petrosyan G.P. takes a very active part in the development and implementation of diverse tasks of agricultural, water management and agricultural significance. Systematically acts as the initiator and organizer of republican, all-Union and international forums.
Tov. Petrosyan G.P. repeatedly represented the interests and achievements of the Soviet land reclamation science at congresses and conferences in the USA, Canada, UAR, Spain, Italy, India, Libya and other countries. His publications and slide stands have been presented at a number of international exhibitions in the cities of Spokone and Los Angeles (USA), Nicosia, Zagreb, Baghdad and Montreal. From 1971 to 1978, being a scientific consultant of the Research Institute of Soil Science of the Republic of Cuba, he rendered great assistance in the training of scientific personnel, for which he was awarded the Big Gold Medal of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. For the development of scientific relations, he was elected an Honorary Member of the NTO of Czechoslovakia.
Tov. Petrosyan G.P. was elected vice-president of the subcommittee on saline soils of the International Soil Science Society and a member of the Central Committee of the International Fertilizer Center. He is the Scientific Supervisor for Armenia of the annual UNEP/USSR International Courses “Reclamation of saline irrigated soils” for specialists from Asia, Africa and Latin America. Elected Deputy Chairman of the Armenian Branch of the USSR-Cuba Friendship Society.
Scientific and social activities of comrade. Petrosyan G.P. multifaceted. He was repeatedly elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia, Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Republic, Deputy Chairman of the All-Union Society of Soil Scientists, a member of a number of scientific and problematic Councils. For more than 20 years, heading the National Scientific and Technical Society of Agriculture of the republic and a branch of the All-Union Society of Soil Scientists, he skillfully uses the capabilities of these organizations to mobilize the scientific forces of institutes of various ministries and departments to solve urgent problems of agricultural production.
